RPC advises Women's Professional Leagues on record-breaking Barclays sponsorship

Published on 27 September 2024

RPC has acted for Women’s Professional Leagues Limited (WPLL) on its historic multi-year sponsorship renewal with Barclays for the Barclays Women’s Super League (WSL) and Barclays Women’s Championship. The landmark agreement is set to be the highest-value sponsorship deal in the history of women’s domestic football worldwide.

This renewal doubles the previous commitment made by Barclays and demonstrates the unwavering support for women’s professional football and marks a significant milestone as WPLL continues its mission to drive growth and establish the WSL as the most distinctive and competitive women’s football league globally.

Nikki Doucet, CEO of WPLL, commented: “Barclays has been a leading light in supporting women’s football, and this renewed partnership is a transformative step forward for the sport. Their long-term commitment strengthens the platform we’re building to grow the game and create sustainable opportunities for future generations of female athletes.”

The deal follows the creation of WPLL, a new independent, club-owned entity which owns and operates the top two tiers of English women’s club football, which broke away from The Football Association earlier this year. Under WPLL leadership, the WSL and Women’s Championship have seen record increases in viewership and attendance, underpinned by the Lionesses’ triumph at Euro 2022.

The RPC team, led by Partner Josh Charalambous, with support from Ellie Chakarto, played a crucial role in advising WPLL throughout the negotiation process.

Josh Charalambous said: “This deal is a major milestone for women’s football and a testament to the growth and potential of the WSL and Women's Championship. We are proud to have supported WPLL on this groundbreaking partnership, which will help drive long-term sustainability and continued development for the game.”

This latest partnership renewal not only cements Barclays' position as a key supporter of women’s football but also aligns with its extended four-year agreement with the Premier League and its ongoing support of grassroots women’s football through the Barclays Girls’ Football School Partnerships.

The renewed sponsorship will provide essential funding for the continued development of the leagues, including increased marketing efforts, expanded infrastructure, and improved player pathways, ensuring a bright and sustainable future for women’s football in England.
