After three years Jonathan Cary returns to RPC's London office to strengthen team

Banking and finance disputes specialist Jonathan Cary has returned to RPC's London office having successfully extended RPC's presence in the Asian disputes market.

While in Hong Kong, Jonathan acted for clients including banks, corporates, funds and individuals in a wide variety of litigation, arbitration and contentious regulatory matters.

"My time in Hong Kong was focused on helping to broaden out our leading Hong Kong disputes practice.  There is a clear place in the market for a firm that is well positioned to take on referral work; in particular, with the ability and experience to act against the large investments banks and in complex financial disputes,"  said Jonathan.

Tom Hibbert, Global Head of Commercial Disputes, said: "Jonathan relocated to Hong Kong in order to mirror the financial disputes service we provided to clients in London and Singapore. Disputes remains a key priority for us in Hong Kong and we are recruiting a new Partner there to build upon the firm foundations Jonathan has successfully laid down over the last three years."

Jonathan joined RPC in 2013 from Shearman & Sterling's London office having previously been with legacy firm Herbert Smith in both London and Hong Kong. He relocated to Hong Kong in 2014.

Meanwhile, RPC's Hong Kong office has grown substantially since opening in 2012, when it first began its association with Smyth & Co. In May this year, the alliance with RPC was formalised and Smyth & Co officially changed its name to Reynolds Porter Chamberlain – trading under the RPC name. The office now numbers 70 people, with a number of recent lateral recruits joining including Corporate Finance specialist Janney Chong who joined from Sidley Austin in March and Private Equity Partner Jeremy Cunningham who moved from Mayer Brown JSM to RPC in November 2016.

The team in Hong Kong is currently in growth mode as it looks to further recruit from the market.
